Hello-

Lake Travis produces some lovely pieces of driftwood.  Folks often use the wood in their yards as landscape pieces.   This is one of the larger and most beautiful specimens I have seen to date.

Wonderful personality!

This driftwood took 5 people to haul up from the lake.  These are 3 of the helpers posing after the move.  Placed in the flower bed at a friend's house, it will look fantastic in the spring with flowers growing all around it!

Enjoy your day and check back soon!

Hello-

The Texas Hill Country does have a "change of seasons" complete with wonderful fall leaves.   The peak season for leaves does fall a little later here than other parts of the country.   These photos were taken yesterday on December 16th which seems (in my professional opinion) to be peak time this year!

Most of the trees in the area are green all year but we have a little "fall flavor"!!

Nice hill of fall colors just outside of Lago Vista.

Enjoy your day and touch back soon-

Hello-

There is a lot of wildlife in the hill country of central Texas--deer, rabbits, foxes, coyotes, armadillos, opossums, lots of skunks this year, etc.   Nature being as it is, someone has to clean up the inevitable mess.   So we have vultures--2 kinds!

Turkey vultures (pictured below) have light colored feathers on the inside/underneath of their wings.  There are also some Black vultures which look very similar.  Easiest method for me is the Black vultures have all black wings!

Here is some general information on both kinds: Turkey Vulture and Black Vulture

They are very efficient at their job as clean up crew and we appreciate that!!

You can easily see the "turkey" shape resemblance in this picture.

Enjoy your day and visit again soon!

Hello-

This is my front yard.  These are the deer--the herd(s) move through once, twice or three times a day.   I do not have to mow the grass in the front yard often.   Careful selection of plants is required for any unfenced area on the North Shore or they will be eaten (quickly).

They do not shy away from people nor did they rush themselves because I was standing in the driveway with a camera.

A group of ladies moves through the side yard.

They really are well suited for the terrian--they blend easily.

Enjoy your day.  Same bat time same bat channel next week!

Hello-

A low Lake Travis has exposed old structures such as this one on the North Shore.   The LCRA has some records of buildings but unfortunately after speaking with Andy, the Staff Archaeologist, we are still clueless as to what this was.  It has 2 long walls and this exposed foundation area.  The support footings are made from trees.

Gloria clears some of the dirt and weight off the slab after the water washes out underneath.

Enjoy your day.  More excitement to come

Hello-

I would like to introduce Daisy who lives on the North Shore of Lake Travis with her owners.  Daisy is extremely enthusiastic about balls and the lake!!   She jumps (big giant leaps) off the dock after the ball.

You can also see in these photos how low the water level is at Lake Travis .   The entire cliff/hill is normally under water!!

Keeping her eye on the ball

Daisy gets some air!!

Stay tuned for more exciting stuff and enjoy your day.

Hello-

If you had not heard, we are having a small drought in Texas.  Lake Travis is of course a little low, actually 38.2 feet below its October average.

Lake Travis is one of the lakes formed by a series of dams on the Colorado River.  These dams form the six Highland Lakes — Buchanan, Inks, LBJ, Marble Falls, Travis and Austin.   For more interesting information on the Highland Lakes visit LCRA (Lower Colorado River Association)

Well we finally had a little rain here!!  It was only about 2-3 inches but a great start.  With the lake so low the shoreline we see is normally underwater.  When that 2-3 inches of rain finally made it's way to the lake it had a little power behind it and dug quite a nice trench.

This area was flat and smooth before the rain--a little beach area.  Rain took care of that idea!

Glad I was not at the lake when this water hit!

More interesting North Shore items soon!

Hello-

These photos are a contribution from my neighbor, Patty.   They were both taken in her yard today.

We have a lot of deer on the North Shore of Lake Travis and they are used to living around people.  It is not uncommon for me to have 5 or 6 deer in the front yard--reduces the need to mow!!

Do you have any carrots??   It is that time of year, you have to keep an eye on the boys !!

Hummingbirds catch a quick snack.

Enjoy your day.  Back with more soon!

Hello-

I have been swimming in Lake Travis for exercise in the mornings for the last 5 months.  A very large Blue Heron has been observing me.  He has been officially named "Mr. Blue".  He shows up every swim now and tends to move down the shoreline to keep up with me.  He is getting bolder and allows me to swim within 10 feet of him on the shore now.  2 weeks ago, he started bringing his girl though she is still a little too shy to let me get close.   I got an underwater camera and snapped a bunch of shots--a couple actually turned out.

Mr. Blue and his gal fly to the other side of the lake.  He escorted her then came back over to pose for me and the next shot!

Mr. Blue--he is really a big bird!   I  have learned that they honk kind of like a goose.

Check back in soon for more North Shore fun!
